Mr. Funai joined the Newmark Realty Capital team in the fall of 2004 and has been a Nevada-licensed Mortgage Broker since 2001, focusing on placement of both construction and long-term financing for all types of commercial real estate. Past assignments have included raising equity for clients by accessing both private and institutional sources of capital, which is typically used as joint venture equity and subordinated debt. Funai has assisted numerous borrower clients with commercial loan modifications, DPOs, and recapitalizations, as well as assisting buyer clients with acquisitions of distressed real estate and note purchases.
Prior to Newmark, Funai was employed with Bank of America in Las Vegas since 1988, starting out as a teller then working as a credit analyst before eventually being promoted to a VP in the commercial real estate division. There, he began originating not only construction and permanent financing, but also provided clients with capital markets products allowing them to hedge interest rate risk with swaps and other financial derivatives. While at BofA, he financed over $350 million over an 8-year lending career, managing a team of producers and overseeing their training, work product, loan production, and loan closings.
Upon leaving BofA, Funai was formally engaged by former banking clients to provide financial analysis, loan structuring and negotiation on a fee basis, including assisting with the capitalization of a $150 million mixed-use development on Las Vegas Boulevard and consulting on the structure and development of a $75 million, 250,000 sf retail shopping center in Las Vegas.
In 2001, Mr. Funai was licensed as a mortgage broker and began placing loans through a small mortgage brokerage firm based in Salt Lake City, Utah, before opening the Las Vegas office for Newmark.
Mr. Funai has lived in Las Vegas since 1988 and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Managerial Finance from UNLV in 1991. Post-graduate work includes courses in the MBA and Lied Real Estate programs at UNLV.
Prior to moving to Las Vegas in 1988, Funai lived in south Orange County for 10 years and took his first job at First Interstate (Wells Fargo) Bank in Laguna Hills, California.
